Caring For Your Teeth After a Procedure

We are committed to supporting your recovery by providing important information and care tips to follow after your dental procedures.

Tenderness & Pain

It is very common to experience some tenderness, difficulty speaking, pain, or bleeding after dental procedures such as cosmetic reconstructions, tooth extractions, root canals, bridges, and other routine procedures.

Adjusting to Your Bite

Adjusting to the feel of your bite after having dental work may take some time. When your bite changes, or the alignment of your teeth is altered, it typically requires a few days for your brain to recognize–and adapt to–your teeth’s new position.

Sensitivity

Experiencing some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures following dental work is quite common. After major dental procedures, it is important to allow time for your teeth to heal, and the recovering area will be temporarily sensitive.

Soreness

Your gums may feel sore for a few days; however, rinsing with warm salt water several times a day can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

Changes in Speech

If you notice a temporary change in your speech during the first few days after dental treatment, there’s no need to worry. This is easily manageable, and you will quickly adapt and begin speaking normally again.

Increased Saliva

You might experience increased saliva production during the first week, which often happens as your brain adjusts to the altered sizes and shapes of your teeth.

Maintain Your Oral Care

Keep in mind that, regardless of any pain or discomfort you may experience, it is still necessary to maintain your daily flossing and brushing routine to care for your teeth following any dental procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect if I haven't had a dental cleaning in over a year?

If your last dental cleaning was more than a year ago, you may require additional periodontal scaling–or cleaning of the tooth below the gum line–to address tartar deposits that have developed in hard-to-reach areas, which can lead to tooth decay or periodontal disease.

Our professional hygienists use advanced tools, including ultrasonic technology, to safely remove these deposits and treat any damage to your teeth or surrounding gum tissues. In some cases, the roots of your teeth may need planing or fine scaling to smooth the rough texture created during cleaning, allowing your gum tissue to better attach for proper healing.

To improve your comfort during these treatments, our hygienists can administer a local anesthetic as needed.

How is a dental sealant applied?

Applying a dental sealant involves painting a specialized plastic resin onto the chewing surfaces of your teeth, particularly the molars, where cavities are most likely to form. Once applied, the resin bonds directly to your teeth for optimal protection. A special curing light is then used to solidify and harden the sealant, creating a durable barrier against decay.

While children and teenagers are more likely to get sealants, they are also suitable for adults of all ages.

How are CEREC crowns made?

CEREC crowns are created using advanced Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing technology in a streamlined, same-day process.

First, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to ensure a proper fit for the crown. Then, a digital impression is taken, capturing the exact details of your tooth and surrounding structures. This digital data is used to design the crown on a computer, allowing for precise customization.

Once the design is finalized, the CEREC machine fabricates the crown from a high-quality ceramic material in just a matter of minutes. After the crown is polished and fitted to your tooth, it is bonded securely into place, providing an aesthetic and durable restoration in just a single visit.

What are the long-term benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants provide a permanent solution to tooth replacement, offering several advantages over removable alternatives like dentures. One of the key benefits is that they help maintain natural speech patterns and do not cause changes in chewing.

Dental implants are also convenient and long-lasting, eliminating concerns about decay and cavities. Additionally, they preserve the natural structure of your face, helping your smile and appearance remain natural. Many patients report a renewed sense of confidence in their smile, making dental implants an appealing choice for tooth replacement.

What should I know about my dentures?

As time passes, dentures can show signs of wear and may need to be replaced or realigned for a comfortable fit. This is because the alignment of dentures changes gradually as your bone and gums continue to shrink following tooth extractions.

It is essential to have regular dental examinations, even if you wear dentures, to monitor your gums for any signs of disease or significant changes. Your dentist can assess the condition of your dentures and recommend when adjustments or replacements are necessary to maintain optimal comfort and oral health.

What is the difference between a complete denture and an immediate denture?

A complete denture is created after all necessary teeth have been extracted and the gums have fully healed. An immediate denture is made and inserted immediately following extractions, allowing you to have functional teeth right away while your gums heal underneath the denture.

How does at-home whitening work?

After an initial consultation, customized whitening trays are created to fit your unique dental structure. Using a professional-grade whitening gel, you simply fill the trays and wear them for the recommended duration, allowing the active ingredients to break down stains and discoloration. This method provides noticeable results in just a few applications, all from the comfort of your home with the care and guidance of dental professionals.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?
  • Nearly invisible in appearance
  • No brackets or wires needed
  • Enjoy unrestricted eating
  • Removable and easy to clean
  • Maintain regular brushing and flossing for oral hygiene
  • Simple replacement for lost or damaged aligners
  • Treats crowding, spacing issues, crossbites, overbites, and underbites
How does Invisalign work?

The Invisalign treatment process typically spans up to 15 months–not any longer–and involves a series of 18 to 30 custom aligners designed to gradually shift your teeth into their ideal positions.

Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks and can be removed only during eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing, allowing for both convenience and flexibility.

As you progress through the series of aligners, you will experience subtle adjustments in your smile, with periodic visits to our clinic approximately every six weeks to monitor your progress and make sure the treatment is on track.
